Among Liberal/National voters, 36% (-3%) prefer Tony Abbott, 35% (+9%) Malcolm Turnbull and 13% (-4%) Joe Hockey.

Malcolm Turnbull is preferred by 39% of men and 36% of women, Tony Abbott by 21% of men and 14% of women.

Trust in Joe Hockey to handle the economy has increased since the Federal Budget and trust in Wayne Swan has fallen. 28% (down 4%) trust Wayne Swan more to handle Australia’s economy and 37% (up 2%) trust Joe Hockey more.

Those on incomes under $1,000pw trust Joe Hockey 34%/31% while those earning over $1,000pw trust Joe Hockey 42%/29%.

Joe Hockey Statement

Q. The Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey recently said people in Western countries have an attitude of “entitlement” and expect the Government to provide assistance and subsidies for things like education, health, income support, retirement benefits, unemployment benefits. Do you agree or disagree that people in Australia receive too much Government assistance?

Respondents were somewhat evenly split on their response to this question – 39% agree that people in Australia receive too much Government assistance while 33% disagree.

23% neither agree nor disagree and 5% don’t know.

Lib/Nat voters were significantly more likely to agree that people in Australia receive too much Government assistance (54%). Labor (55%) and Green (58%) voters were more likely to disagree.

Males (44%) were far more likely than females (32%) to agree that people in Australia receive too much Government assistance.

Those aged 65+ were also more likely to agree with this statement (48%), however those aged 55-64 were less likely (34%).

24% think Kevin Rudd would be best to lead Australia if there was another GFC and 20% favour Tony Abbott.

Among Labor voters Julia Gillard is preferred over Kevin Rudd 42% to 34%. Support for the current party leaders among their own voters is very similar – 42% of Labor voters prefer Julia Gillard and 44% of Liberal/National voters prefer Tony Abbott.
