    Mining tax

    Q. The Minerals Resource Rent tax (Mining tax) raised $126 million from the three biggest mining companies in its first six months of operation. Which is closer to your view?

    Views about what to do with the mining tax were mixed. 29% think it should be amended to raise more money, 21% think it should be maintained in its current form and 28% think it should be dumped.

    43% of Labor voters and 49% of Greens voters think it should be amended to raise more money while 49% of Liberal/National voters think it should be dumped. Queensland respondents were more likely to think it should be dumped (35%) while Victorian respondents favoured amending it to raise more money (35%).

    Taxing Mining Company Profits

    There was majority approval of higher taxes on the profits of large mining companies – 56% approved and 27% disapproved. Labor and Greens voters showed very high approval while Liberal/National voters split 36% approve/49% disapprove.

    There were no significant differences by demographic groupings (age/income/work status).
