Among those who have read the newspaper, 18% have a lot of trust in the SMH and 14% have a lot of trust in The Age. 12% of readers of The Australian have a lot of trust in the newspaper but only 6% have a lot of trust in The Telegraph. 50% have not much or no trust in The Telegraph, 46% not much/no trust in the Courier Mail and 45% not much/no trust in The Herald Sun.

Overall, the most trusted newspapers were the SMH (70% a lot/some trust) and The Age (66%). The least trusted were The Telegraph (46% a lot/some trust), the HeraldSun (48%) and the Courier Mail (48%).

Since this question was asked in 2013, there have been declines in trust in the Courier Mail (down 9%) and The Australian (down 7%), while The Age has declined by 5%.

The most trusted media commentators and journalists were Laurie Oakes (71%), Sarah Ferguson, Tony Jones and Mark Riley (all 51%).

The least trusted were Alan Jones (29%) and Andrew Bolt (38%).

Overall, trust in media has fallen a little since this question was asked last year – however rankings remain much the same.

The most trusted media were ABC TV news and current affairs (63% a lot/some trust), SBS TV news and current affairs (61%) and ABC radio news and current affairs (58%).

The least trusted were internet blogs (20%) and commercial radio talkback programs (34%).

From a list of eight professions, a majority of respondents had trust in doctors (81%) and engineers (68%). About half (49%) had trust in accountants – who were considered more trustworthy that lawyers (34%) or bankers (29%).

Politicians (11%) and real estate agents (12%) were the least trusted.

These results are little changed since this question was asked in the week prior to the Federal Budget.

Overall, 33% (up 2% since February) have a lot or some trust in Tony Abbott and the Liberal Government to handle Australia’s international relations and 58% (down 4%) have a little or no trust. Only 13% (up 1%) have “a lot of trust” and 38% (down 2%) have no trust.

Labor (62%) and Greens (71%) voters were far more likely to have ‘no trust’. 32% Liberal/National voters have “a lot of trust”- up 4% since February.
